Veroni Active - Vitamin Water
introduction: having not ventured into the world of sports drinks too often, i get pretty negative vibes from most of these products. i don’t know what it is about them, but it all says “we’re trying a little too hard.” is it the technological aesthetics of the packaging (with its obvious insistence on the product’s thirst-quenching capacities)? is it the long list of “vitamins and minerals” which should incentivise the consumer to gorge on the potion after an intense workout? i don’t know. perhaps it’s the bluish tint of the bottle, another effort to convey the drink must be hydrating. anyway - time to drink up.
taste profile: light grapefruit/citrus notes in the smell, as soon as you crack the bottle open. the murky fluid tastes as you would imagine - soap-like lemon and a hint of orange, both watered down to a point where it may stand a chance to quench your thirst. it would probably be successful in doing so if it wasn’t so unexpectedly sweet: this one’s got sugar, about 5,1g/100ml. it would be worth mentioning that the mix of citrus flavours is quite well put together with this one. Zbyszko did okay and it certainly achieves a good flavour balance. what it really does well is to avoid the “soapy” taste of most lemon-flavoured drinks. the aftertaste is really subdued - mostly sugar, little else. it certainly goes down quickly on account of how watery it really is.
rating: 7/10 - i’m on my second 7/10 rating for a sports drink. I just don’t get it - these are supposed to be functional drinks, tailored to serve a specific purpose (in this case, to quench your thirst when you’re being all active and working out). it doesn’t stand out to me and my expectations were set by the NF Sport Drink; it feels like I’m having a very slight variation of the same thing. what exactly makes manufacturers think they’d get a slice of the market by releasing more of these, i am not sure. what makes Coke clones sell? guess that’s something I’ll have to think about as I drink more of these and inch ever closer to stomach cancer.
