early autumn is probably the best time to go hiking in the Carpathians. the weather’s a little more predictable and you won’t have to deal with sudden showers.
september’s when it starts getting cold. hikers become acutely aware of this above an altitude of, say, 1500 metres, particularly during the night. the gentle breeze of summer turns into a chilling whip; the clouds loom even closer to the peaks; and daylight rarely allows for more than ten hours of comfortable (or hazard-free!) walking.
i find all this comforting: my earliest memories of hiking all involve misty forests, cold rain, my own painful legs, and a quiet friend who always walked ahead.
