Folkington’s PRESSED mango juice
wholesome taste, honest presentation.
this has been in my fridge for a comfortable six months at this point. the time has come to try out one of the most attractively packaged drinks from my stash. it’s all in the details: the colour scheme, the pull tab which helps you peel off the plastic label, the little, colourful text separators. not only that, but also the copy does a great job to turn what is probably an average mango culture into a unique, recognizable product identity. for this one, i am anticipating a pleasant experience, filled with (natural) flavour and a thick, wholesome consistency.
taste profile: the safety button pops satisfyingly as i twist the cap off the glass bottle. it smells just like a fresh mango smoothie - vegetal, a little sweet, complex, and above all, natural. it looks the part too - through the glass bottle, i can see its real colour.
the sweetness is well balanced, reminiscent of a ripe mango. in fact, it tastes just like mango: sweet in the front, ever so slightly pungent, followed by a vaguely grassy aftertaste. that sums it up - am i glad to be saying this!
its consistency is thick and wholesome, just as expected. no fizziness, no strange innovations.
rating: wholesome taste, honest presentation. 9/10, no reservations.
health impact: 9.5g sugar/100ml. however, this one is excusable: it has no added sugar and it is not made from mango concentrate either. see the list of ingredients in the gallery above.
background: Folkington’s is a UK-based drinks company. with an exceptional website and a clearly cut brand identity, Folkington’s strikes me as a great example of how to present a product, which also happens to be great and lives up to the standards set by the packaging. they even go as far as to say the philosophy behind their drinks is similar to that of fine wine production, which is so over the top it breaks through the cringe and walks deep into cool territory.
the East Sussex-based company’s range of products includes not only juices, but also pressés and mixers.
i can’t stress enough how great Folkington’s online presentation is, with a beautifully crafted website, which is rich in media and (subjectively) positive energy, a facebook page with great photography, along with a similarly pleasant instagram feed.
delving a little deeper, Folkington’s was incorporated in 1999 under the M&R 742 LIMITED moniker. its current name is Metro Drinks ltd. looking over the latest financial statement available on Companies House, the company appears to be doing well. honestly, i hope that’s the case.
